A harrowing saga in the South Atlantic has concluded with the successful rescue of the seven-person crew of the MV Christina Debora, a standby guard vessel that had been adrift for weeks after suffering a catastrophic clutch failure. The dramatic events highlight the resilience of maritime cooperation and the unforgiving nature of the open sea.
The ordeal became known on the afternoon of June 11th, when an urgent request for private assistance was received from the Christina Debora, approximately 350 miles northwest of St. Helena. The 38.77-meter vessel had lost propulsion due to a failed clutch pack and had been without engine power for at least three days when the initial request came in.
Despite the unusual nature of the request, direct communication with the ship confirmed the genuine plight of the crew.
Initial attempts to contact the local Island authorities to provide immediate assistance were hampered by a lack of local capabilities from St. Helena or Ascension Island to travel such a vast distance.
The crew, facing dwindling supplies of fresh water and food, urgently required 8mm welding rods, 30mm steel plate, and various Allen keys (sizes 10, 12, 14, 16, and 18 – two of each) to attempt a temporary repair.
By June 14th, after intense coordination involving the Christina Debora’s owners, agents, and various maritime support teams, a glimmer of hope emerged. The geared bulk carrier ARETI.GR, measuring 199.98 meters in length, successfully rendezvoused with the Christina Debora under calm conditions at 23:00 UTC. Critical relief in the form of fresh water, food, and the much-needed repair parts were transferred. Around 23:30 UTC, the ARETI.GR, en route from Baltimore, Maryland, to Mundra, India, departed, leaving behind a deeply relieved crew. The SV Bark Europa, which had also departed St. Helena to assist, was stood down and received sincere gratitude for its readiness.
Optimism was high that the temporary repairs would take approximately 24 hours, allowing the Christina Debora to limp to St. Helena for a permanent fix. However, on the morning of June 19th, devastating news arrived: the temporary clutch repair had failed again, scuppering plans for an onward journey. Heavy swells had evidently stressed the repair beyond its limits.
With the clutch now deemed irreparable at sea, and after much negotiation with Ascension authorities proving fruitless, the crew faced only two stark options: evacuation or towing. Compounding the dire situation was the notable scarcity of passing ships in the area over the preceding eight days.
As weather conditions rapidly deteriorated, a formal distress call was officially executed to MRCC NATAL. Their swift response, followed by urgent electronic messages to nearby merchant vessels MV Theseus and the LPG tanker Aquamarine Progress, requested the immediate rescue of the Christina Debora’s crew.
The MV Theseus, a 368.99-meter container carrier en route from Baltimore, USA, to Port Klang, Indonesia, responded quickly. After assessing the situation, her Captain requested the Christina Debora’s crew to be ready for disembarkation upon the MV Theseus’s arrival. The rescue evacuation operation is believed to have taken place early on the evening of June 22nd.
The MV Theseus adjusted her course for Cape Town, where she arrived at 07:00 SA time on June 29th. The port control tender “Condor” met the vessel to tranship the weary crew of the Christina Debora back to dry land, bringing an end to their prolonged South Atlantic ordeal.
The THESEUS was underway again at 0820LT (0620UTC) heading for the Indian Ocean.
The current status of the Christina Debora remains unknown, but she was last transmitting “Not under command” (NUC) in the Atlantic northwest of St. Helena, a silent testament to the challenges of the sea and the enduring spirit of human assistance. This operation stands as a powerful reminder that, in maritime emergencies, every gesture of help in the right direction can indeed make all the difference.
