Get ready for an action-packed day at the Emergency Services Open Day on Friday, 22 August 2025, from 10am to 4pm at the Sea Rescue Base in Rupert’s. This free event promises to be a spectacular showcase of the vital work carried out by our local Emergency services and partner agencies; it will also enable you to foster greater understanding and appreciation of their role within our community. Whether you’re a curious child, a concerned parent, or simply someone who wants to better understand how the Island’s emergency teams operate then this day is for you.
What to Expect? Throughout the day, you’ll have the rare opportunity to get up close with emergency vehicles, engage directly with the people behind the uniform. You could even be lucky enough to climb aboard a fire engine or ambulance and try out some equipment. You can also take part in family-friendly activities including an obstacle course, rope-tying competition, and even a fire truck pull!
The Ambulance Service operates with vehicles one of which is a land rover designed for reaching remote locations and with a dedicated team of seven full-time crew members, while the St Helena Sea Rescue Service boasts a quick-response fleet that includes two 8.5-metre Gemini RIBs, one 4.5-metre Gemini inflatable, and one 11-metre Red Bay RIB. Currently the Sea Rescue Service has seven full time staff and eight auxiliary staff. The Fire & Rescue Service have a total of nine full time crew
All of the Island’s emergency services and first responders are on hand 24/7 to deal with your emergencies. All emergencies are managed through the Joint Emergency Services Control Centre (JESCC), which employs up to eight fully trained team members capable of dealing with any type of emergency.
During the open day, you can watch live demonstrations that bring real emergency scenarios to life. You won’t go hungry either refreshments will be available which includes Dan’s scrumptious hot food, bakes and treats along with Uncle Borb’s Ice Cream van to browse and buy.
This is more than just a fun day out it’s an important opportunity to learn about the essential services that keep St Helena safe, you’ll walk away with a deeper appreciation for the people who protect our island and maybe even be inspired to join them one day!
