The internationally renowned Momentum Multiply Titans, one of South Africa’s premier professional cricket teams, have swapped cricket bats for fishing rods during their week-long pre-season training camp on the Island.
The full squad and coaching staff touched down at our St Helena Airport on Saturday, 23 August with SA Airlink the weekly air service provider connecting St Helena to the world. Upon arrival, the Titans posed for their first official team photograph in front of the St Helena Airport terminal, marking the beginning of what promises to be a memorable sporting and cultural exchange.
At dawn on Sunday, the team wasted no time and eagerly prepared themselves just before 6 am to board the designated local boats for an arranged St Helena Fishing experience. They were divided into groups for the trip stepping out on four vessels: Ocean Queen, skippered by Adrian Duncan; Ocean Gypsy, skippered by Captain Julian of Wicked Wahoo; Sea Horse, skippered by Ricky Thomas; and Helena Dorothy, skippered by Peter Darka Benjamin, who is amongst one of the Island’s finest and longest serving commercial fishermen
Fishing is one of St Helena’s richest natural assets, the sea surrounding St Helena provided the perfect successful challenge for the players, who eagerly tried their hand at deep-sea fishing under the experience guidance of the local boat crews.
While many enjoyed catching tuna and a good time had by all, the last boat arrived back at the landing steps just before 1pm.
While fishing was an exciting opener, the Titans’ schedule reflects both their professional focus and their commitment to community engagement.
The Titans will attend the Annual 1st Jamestown Scouts’ Sports Day after their fishing adventure, joining the community in traditional games and activities a yearly event that takes place every year on the Bank Holiday weekend.
Cricket takes centre stage as the team works with the St Helena Cricket Association (SHCA). In parallel, SuperSport’s Derek Alberts will host a Sports Videography Masterclass, sharing insights into professional sports broadcasting.
The squad will spend a morning with the New Horizons Youth Club, followed by tackling the iconic Jacob’s Ladder Challenge.
Another coaching clinic with SHCA, giving local cricketers an unparalleled opportunity to train alongside professional athletes. The team’s performance camp will be held at Francis Plain, allowing the community to observe the athletes in action.
The camp concludes on Saturday, 30 August 2025, marking the end of a historic first visit from a professional cricket team of this calibre.
This is the first time St Helena has hosted a professional cricket team, putting the island on the sporting map. Based in Centurion, South Africa, the Titans are celebrated for their championship pedigree and for producing several South Africa’s national cricket team players.
Beyond the boundary lines, the visit shines a spotlight on St Helena’s unique offerings. From deep-sea fishing and hiking Post Box walks to exploring Napoleonic heritage sites and enjoying the warmth of island hospitality, the Titans’ stay demonstrates the Island’s capacity to host high-profile international visitors.
This landmark event has been made possible through collaboration between Airlink, St Helena tourism, The St Helena Cricket Association, and a host of local businesses and services. Together, they are ensuring the Titans’ visit is as enriching for the community as it is for the team.
For St Helena, the Titans’ arrival is more than just a sporting event it is a celebration of culture, opportunity, and international connection.
