Donate and Support St Helena’s Spin on a World Cup Dream at 70

Gavin George

Lifelong cricketer Gavin George is chasing his dream to promote St Helena on the world stage – and you can help make it happen.

Gavin, a proud St Helenian, and lifelong cricketer, has been invited to represent the Rest of the World XI in the Over-70s Cricket World Cup in Christchurch, New Zealand (February 17 – March 5, 2026) https://restoftheworld.co.uk/.

Cricket is a beloved sport on St Helena, and the Island has its own cricket association which is an affiliate member of the International Cricket Council (ICC) The St Helena Cricket Association (SHCA) manages the national league as well as competing in international competitions. Founded in 1903, the St Helena Cricket League on St Helena has been a cornerstone of community life, and Gavin has played a pivotal role in this league, competing in many St Helena cricket competitions over the years, mentoring younger players, and promoting cricket across the island for decades.

From barefoot cricket on the streets of Jamestown to becoming one of the island’s most respected players, Gavin’s passion for the sport has never wavered. Over the years, Gavin has won numerous awards for his performance and Sportsmanship. Now, over the ripe age of 70, Gavin continues to play, proving his enduring fitness, skill, and dedication to the game. This World Cup invitation is the culmination of a lifetime devoted to cricket and a chance to showcase St Helena on a global stage.

Travel from St Helena is challenging. Even with the new airport, Gavin must take a 4.5-hour flight to Johannesburg before connecting to international flights. To make this dream a reality, he needs to raise £6,000 to cover his share of the costs:

  • Return international flights
  • 18 nights’ bed & breakfast accommodation
  • Ground transfers and taxes
  • Team fees and logistics

The final payment is due 6 December 2025.
