He is survived by his loving wife Daphne; son Carl and wife Hilary; daughter Cheryl and husband Robert; and daughters Amanda and Tessa.

Peter was a proud grandfather to Chad and partner Georgia, Mario and partner Shelley, Kirsty, and Corey and wife Louanne. He was also a cherished grandfather to Jerome, Tyrone, Aria, Elliot, Steve, Shanade, and Sasha.

He will be dearly missed by his sister Maisie and family, as well as his nephews, nieces, relatives, and friends both on the island and overseas.

Peter will be sorely missed by us all.

THE EULOGY OF PETER EARL PETERS AGE 81 YEARS OLD

Peter was born to the late Percival and Florence Peters on 8th February 1944. His birth took place at their home in Horse Pasture. Peter’s Nana Stroud was the midwife and delivered babies at their homes. Peter’s family cottage still can be seen to this day at the back of Horse Pasture Picnic Area.

Peter had 6 other siblings of which one died in childbirth. They were the late Arthur Peters, Percy Peters, Hilda Williamson and Jean Henry. Maisie the youngest still doted on her big brother to the end of his life. Maisie recalls Peter carrying her on piggy back from their home in Horse Pasture to Frenches Gutt to catch the school bus.

Peter’s home was always cosy with the wood stove and cakes baking. His family raised cattle, goats and chickens and they had cats and a dog for their pets. Nothing was too hard for Peter, he helped his dad to chop down trees and collected the wood for their stove and collected water for the donkeys to carry to their home. He was excited with these chores because he gets to have his Sunday bath. Peter’s family moved to Red Hill few years later.

His love for animals continued, he became the owner of his late beloved dog Husky, who actually belonged to daughter Tessa. Then April last year Bud, belonging to Jerome and Tyrone came into his life. Bud gave him a final lick on his arm after Peter had passed.

In 1958, when Peter was 14.5 years old he followed in his dad’s footsteps and he went to work in the Flax Mill down Broad Bottom, Blue Hill. At the age of 17 years Peter had chance to go to Ascension Island to work as a Stevedore down the Pierhead. Later he became the Assistant Charge-Hand at the Pierhead.

On one of his holidays back to St. Helena his eyes fell on the light of his life Daphne. She always shopped at his Granny’s store adjacent to his home at Red Hill. Peter returned to Ascension after his holiday and when he returned to St. Helena on his 2nd holiday, he married Daphne on 17th August 1968 and returned to Ascension a week later.

On 16th December 1968, their 1st born Carl arrived. Peter came back to St. Helena August 1969 and this time when he returned to Ascension he took Daphne, 10-month-old Carl and Step-daughter Cheryl with him because he had an accompanied contract. In 1972 Amanda was born and later saw the arrival of Tessa in 1978. In 2001, Cheryl and Robert took Peter and Daphne to the UK for the 1st time. He was so excited at this eye-opening experience.

He wished he had visited the big world sooner. When Peter became 60 years old his contract ended on Ascension so he returned to St. Helena with Daphne, Amanda and Tessa. He worked on Ascension for 44 years. Peter was not a man to sit still and became a Prison Warden at the St. Helena HM Prison. This was the shortest contract he’s ever had – after 3-night shifts he resigned. He could not bring himself to search the visitor’s belongings. That’s the kind of caring man he always was.

On 30th May 2005 – 4th November 2014, Peter became the bus driver for Solomon’s & Co. He was loved by all his passengers. He helped everyone endlessly with their shopping to their home from the bus, seeing they’re seated comfortably and being their friendly driver.

Peter was a brilliant Grand-dad. He loved all his Grandchildren Mario, Kirsty, Corey, Chad, Jerome, Tyrone, Steve, Shanade and Sasha. Not forgetting his Great Grandchildren Aria, Elliot and Kendra. Peter tolerated a lot of illnesses in his life…..knee replacement, heart stents, kidney problem, prostate cancer, shingles and liver and lung cancer that took his life. In March 2025 Peter became ill.

He was diagnosed on Daphne’s birthday 4th April. Hearing he had only 3 to 6 months of his life left he took it well, and said “don’t worry over me, I’ll be ok, just look after your mummy for me”. This always happened, he thinks of everyone else, no matter what’s in store for him.

He was so happy when Carl, Hilary, Mario, Shelly, Elliot, Kirsty, Aria, Corey, Chad, Sefton and Louise came from the UK and Ascension to spend quality time with him. He was so loved that the family friend Shaun, who he hadn’t seen in 41 years came from the UK to be with him too. Peter became very ill 2 weeks before he passed.

He waved to all who visited him on Saturday 16th Aug and said “Goodbye and love you all”. His wish was not to go to the hospital and so he was cared for at home by Cheryl and Amanda.

He never complained, always said “thank you” whenever something was done for him. He had numerous of visitors which showed how much he was thought off and loved. Peter was a true gentle giant like many called him. Kind, caring and loving.

He slipped away peacefully and quietly at home with his immediate family by his side at 17.15 hours on Tuesday 19th August 2025, 2 days after their 57th Wedding Anniversary and 4 months and 3 weeks after been diagnosed. Peter, you will be greatly missed but you’re no longer in pain and your suffering is over. You are captured in our hearts forever. REST IN PEACE PETER, DAD, PAPA AND RISE IN ETERNAL GLORY
